"deathbed" recently hit two billion streams, which is amazing! Did you ever expect that, and what was your initial reaction to it?
I was very thankful. Maybe I was a little bit shocked, but not really, I felt kind of prepared for it. I’m just really thankful, that’s basically it.
I recently saw your post on Easter about the story of doubting Thomas, which is one of my favorite stories from the book of John. Can you elaborate on the post?
I must have been reading it, I guess. I find that sometimes when I read a cool Bible verse, I like to share it on my social media. I just think that it’s valuable to read scripture. There's that verse that says, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
You have your own clothing brand, “UNWORTHY”. What inspired you to make Christian clothing?
I didn't really like selling merch that had my name on it. I wasn't really excited to do that, it kind of felt bland. I figured it's probably smarter to start a brand as well. It would probably reach more people, and illustrate a good Bible verse. I'm not promoting my name, I'm promoting Jesus, so that's why I started it.
Can you tell us about your song “under your wing”?
I think I played the chorus on guitar, and then I was freestyling the melody. I had my sister-in-law on it and we started writing together.
Can you give us your “elevator testimony”?
I noticed there's a lot of lukewarm Christians, a lot of hypocrites, and I don't want to be like that if I believe Jesus is real, which I do. I know He's real, there is so much evidence of it. I said that I was gonna go full force. I'm gonna give Him everything, so I'm gonna start reading and praying. That's when I started hearing Him, and when I started seeing more miracles. There's nothing more beautiful than the story of Jesus, knowing that the Creator of the world died for you. Once you receive the Holy Spirit, the joy, the peace, and the hope you receive, there's nothing like it, and it's just evidence of eternity with Him. Nobody else rose from the dead.
What would you consider to be like your life verse?
I really like, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you” (John 15:18). I got it tattooed. I like that one a lot, because I think it’s a really cool thing to overcome, and not care about, just to deny yourself, you know? Trying not to beat yourself up. The blessings you receive from that are a lot. I think naturally, every human, everything we do is to make people like us, or make ourselves look good. Once you start following Jesus, you realize it doesn't really matter what people think about you.
You have collaborated with many, many artists over the years, one of those being Forrest Frank. What was it like to collaborate with him?
We were just messaging on Instagram, he liked my music and I liked his. He sent me a song with an open verse on it. I really liked it, so I recorded a verse and sent it back. We FaceTimed a little bit, and made a couple changes. That was basically it. I met him once. I went to a show, almost a year ago, in Seattle. It was really cool to see that. It was probably the biggest room I’ve been in that was full of pure worship.
What are your hopes for this tour? What are you hoping people gain from this?
Have a good time, see that me and my openers are genuine and on the path to grow closer to God. Hopefully, you can feel the Holy Spirit, feel joyful and safe. That's why we're here. We're hoping everyone else sees the same thing.
